Bedtime story for a 5-year-old. Main character: a robot vacuum who is scared of the stairs. Under 300 words. No moral at the end, please, she sees through those.

Pip was a round little robot who lived under the sofa and came out at night to eat crumbs.

Pip liked crumbs very much. Toast crumbs, cracker crumbs, the tiny sparkly crumbs from the cat’s biscuits. Pip would hum a happy hum and go bump into the table leg and turn around and hum some more.

But at the end of the hallway there was a place Pip never went.

The stairs.

The stairs went down. Pip did not do down. Pip did along. Every night, Pip rolled to the very edge, felt the floor stop, and said, very quietly, “Nope,” and rolled back to the crumbs.

One night, a sock fell down the stairs. Just one sock. A small blue one.

Pip looked at the sock. The sock looked lonely.

Pip rolled to the edge. “Nope,” said Pip. Pip rolled back.

Pip rolled to the edge again. The sock was still there. It was very blue.

Pip made a new sound. Not a hum. A sort of hmmmmmMMMMM. And Pip tipped, just a little, and then — bumpity bumpity bumpity bump — Pip was at the bottom.

Pip was upside down. Pip’s wheels went round and round in the air.

“Well,” said Pip. “That is a very fine sock.”

And in the morning, the little girl who lived in the house found Pip at the bottom of the stairs, wheels in the air, next to one small blue sock, and she laughed and turned Pip the right way up.

Pip hummed.

Pip still doesn’t like stairs. But Pip knows what’s at the bottom now, and that is something.

She asked for “the one where Pip goes bumpity” again the next night. Well done.
